Sometimes, the most interesting photography assignments involve places that have been completely reimagined.
Michael Photography recently had the opportunity to photograph a remarkable renovation project in Au Gres, Mi completed by Araam Design.
What was once a modest 600-square-foot storage building, located directly on the shoreline of Saginaw Bay, has been transformed into a little, charming, and comfortable vacation cottage.
The project demonstrates how creative vision, thoughtful planning, and careful attention to detail can give an existing structure an entirely new purpose.
The extent of the transformation becomes even more apparent when looking at the building during renovation. With exposed framing, unfinished walls, and structural elements visible, this photograph offers a glimpse of the work involved before Araam Design brought the finished cottage to life.

A Remarkable Transformation on the Lakefront
The location alone makes this property special. Situated directly along the shoreline of Saginaw Bay, the cottage offers beautiful water views and immediate access to the waterfront.
Araam Design was responsible for the entire transformation, taking a building originally used for storage and turning it into an inviting vacation retreat.
With only 600 square feet available, every design decision becomes important. As a result, the finished cottage combines practical living features with the warmth and character of a traditional lakeside getaway.

Making the Most of 600 Square Feet
One of the most impressive aspects of this project is how much has been accomplished within a relatively small footprint.

The kitchen features white cabinetry, brass hardware, a farmhouse-style sink, stainless steel appliances, and attractive countertops. Natural wood walls and exposed ceiling beams provide warmth, while the lighter cabinetry helps create an open, welcoming appearance.
The thoughtful arrangement of appliances, cabinetry, and work surfaces makes the kitchen both attractive and functional.

Meanwhile, the bedroom continues the cottage’s inviting atmosphere with natural wood finishes, exposed ceiling beams, a blue upholstered headboard, and coordinated bedding.
Even a stacked washer and dryer has been incorporated into the available space, demonstrating how modern conveniences can be included without requiring a large floor plan.
These are the kinds of design details that make a small-space renovation especially interesting to photograph.

Photographing the Vision of Araam Design
As a professional photographer, I approach an interior design assignment differently from a traditional real estate photography session.
While real estate photography emphasizes the overall appearance and layout of a property, interior design photography places additional importance on the creative decisions that define the finished space.
So, for this assignment, my objective was to create photographs that accurately represented the work of Araam Design.
Camera height, composition, perspective, lighting, and color accuracy were all important considerations. Michael Photography does not rely on AI for image processing.
The natural wood finishes, contrasting cabinetry, decorative details, and architectural features needed to be represented faithfully.
In a compact interior, selecting the right camera position is particularly important. The goal is to show the relationship between different elements without exaggerating the actual size of the rooms.

More Than Just an Interior

An important part of this assignment was capturing the setting that makes the cottage unique.
The waterfront deck overlooks the sandy shoreline and the open waters of Saginaw Bay.
Photographing this view helps complete the visual story. It connects the thoughtfully renovated interior with the lakefront environment that makes the property an appealing vacation destination.
Together, the interior and exterior photographs provide a more complete presentation of the transformation.
Professional Photography for Designers, Builders, and Creative Professionals
Projects like this demonstrate the value of professional photography beyond traditional real estate marketing.
Interior designers, renovation specialists, builders, and commercial businesses invest considerable time, money, and effort into their completed projects.
Professional photographs provide a lasting visual record of that work and can be used for websites, portfolios, promotional materials, and future marketing.
For Michael Photography, photographing the Araam Design cottage project in Au Gres, MI was an excellent opportunity to document an impressive transformation while showcasing the details that make the finished project distinctive.
From a simple lakefront storage building to an inviting little vacation cottage, this project is an excellent example of what creative planning and thoughtful design can accomplish.
