Should Senior Pictures Be Taken Before Senior Year?
You don’t have to wait until senior year officially begins.
Many students schedule their senior photography during the summer between their junior and senior years. This can be an excellent time because school, sports, homework, and other activities haven’t yet taken over the calendar.
Summer also provides plenty of daylight for outdoor sessions. That makes it easier to photograph at different locations and create a variety of images without feeling rushed by an early sunset.
Another important consideration is your school’s yearbook deadline. Deadlines vary considerably between schools, so find out when your senior portrait needs to be submitted before deciding when to schedule your session.
Summer Senior Pictures: June Through August
Summer is one of the most popular times for senior photography in Michigan.
Trees and grass are green, flowers may be available, evenings stay light longer, and there are many possibilities for outdoor locations. Summer can work particularly well for seniors who want a relaxed outdoor appearance.
Longer daylight also gives us more flexibility when selecting the time of day for a session.
The obvious consideration is Michigan summer weather. Hot temperatures and humidity can sometimes make an outdoor session uncomfortable, so the time of day and weather forecast can make a difference.
For seniors involved in fall sports or other school activities, completing senior pictures during the summer can also remove one item from an already busy fall schedule.
Fall Senior Pictures: September and October
For seniors who love autumn, September and October can provide some of Michigan’s most distinctive backgrounds.
Changing leaves, warmer earth tones, and cooler temperatures can create a completely different appearance from a summer senior session.
Fall color, however, doesn’t operate according to an exact schedule. The timing and intensity of Michigan’s fall colors vary from year to year, and weather can change conditions quickly.
If fall color is especially important to you, it’s a good idea to plan ahead while remaining somewhat flexible about the exact location.
Fall also brings shorter days. By October, available evening light disappears considerably earlier than it does during the summer.
What About Winter Senior Pictures?
Winter shouldn’t automatically be ruled out.
Snow can create a beautiful and completely different senior portrait. A fresh snowfall can provide a simple background that puts attention directly on the senior.
The challenge is that Michigan winters are unpredictable. There can be beautiful snow one week and bare ground, wind, or uncomfortable temperatures the next.

Are Spring Senior Pictures Too Late?
Not necessarily.
March, April, and May can still be good times for senior pictures, particularly for someone who didn’t have them taken during the previous summer or fall.
Later spring provides greener backgrounds and comfortable temperatures, but students need to consider graduation schedules and yearbook deadlines. By this point, it may be too late for a school’s senior yearbook submission even though there is still plenty of time to create senior portraits for family, graduation announcements, and other uses.
Spring can also be a good choice for students who simply prefer that season or want a different appearance from the traditional fall senior portrait.
Indoor or Outdoor Senior Pictures?
The season becomes less important when indoor photography is part of your senior session.
Outdoor photography gives us natural backgrounds, seasonal color, architecture, and locations that can relate to a senior’s personality or interests.
Indoor photography provides something different. Controlled professional lighting and backgrounds allow us to create images that aren’t dependent on Michigan weather.
There doesn’t have to be an either-or decision. Some seniors prefer traditional studio portraits. Others want contemporary indoor photography, outdoor locations, or a combination of different styles.
The goal is to create enough variety that your senior pictures don’t all look as though they came from the same setting.
Consider Your Sports, Hobbies and Interests
The calendar isn’t the only consideration when scheduling senior pictures.
Think about what you’d like your photographs to say about you.
A senior involved in football, baseball, basketball, dance, music, equestrian activities, motorsports, or another interest may want to incorporate that activity into some of the photographs.
Cars, trucks, motorcycles, musical instruments, sports equipment, uniforms and other meaningful items can also become part of a senior session.
If something is an important part of your high school years, senior photography is an opportunity to preserve it.
Planning these photographs in advance can affect when and where your session should take place.
Don’t Wait Until the Last Minute
Even though senior pictures can be taken throughout the year, waiting until the last minute limits your options.
You may have less flexibility with appointment times, locations and weather. You could also find yourself trying to fit senior photography into a calendar already filled with school, sports, work, graduation activities and other commitments.
